Into the Abstract
Wednesdays 9:00am – 12:00 pm

6/15/22 – 8/10/22 (9 Sessions)

A new class format to explore abstraction through composition! Both the abstraction of reality and the process of creating non-representational art will be our focus; compositional principles will be discussed and implemented in our paintings and drawings. There will be technique demonstrations each onsite session (beginning with first week), with time for questions and individual advice.

This is a mixed media class; materials can be both painting and drawing media, even some collage materials may be used.

Old Masters Painting: Exploring Western Classical Techniques
Thursdays 9:00am – 12:00pm

6/16/22 – 8/11/22 (9 Sessions)

Explore the techniques of the old masters. Using oils or acrylics, work
through the processes of underpainting, grisaille, layering and
glazing to achieve a beautiful and timeless three-dimensionality.
Previous experience with paint is not necessary, drawing skills are helpful. Come to first class
with materials from list, ready to work! Returnees are welcome!

Figure Drawing: Chasing Nicolaides
Fridays 9:00 AM – 12:00 AM

6/17/22 – 8/12/22 (9 Sessions)

This class, based on The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides, will follow his course of study in drawing the figure. By following the exercises planned each week, students can expect to increase observational skills, improve their drawing ability, and become more confident in their quest for “the true nature of artistic creation”. Second of a 3 class series, each quarter can be taken separately. Beginners to Advanced

Material’s fee $20. Bring a large drawing board and some charcoal. If you can, purchase a copy of The Natural Way to Draw.

Open Studio Figure Drawing and Painting
Fridays 1:00 – 4:00 PM

6/17/22 – 8/12/22 (9 Sessions)

Studio available for working from the figure, short and long poses, supervised use; no instruction. Participants provide their own supplies. Different model each week. Enrollment limited. Concerning oil paints: Light solvents only (low voc), only Turpenoid or Gamsol, and only Gamblin’s Solvent Free Galkyd.

  1. Hi! I saw that you are teaching at the Walnut Creek community center in the fall. I was really excited to take a drawing class but none of the classes offered are in the evening and I have two small children. I’m wondering if you offer or know of any other drawing classes in the evening? I’m new to the area and not sure where else to look! Thanks for your help!
